About

Welcome to my blog!  This little chunk of cyberspace has been a long time in coming, but now that it's here, pull up a seat, grab a cup of tea or coffee or whatever suits your fancy, and take a look.  I hope to use this space to share some fascinating ideas and experiences with you concerning (mostly) indoor gardening that I stumble across.

These projects/ideas/experiences will probably range from the crazy, impossible, and/or expensive to the the simplest things that require nothing more than a cheap plant and a little DIY creativity (or just very detailed instructions for my own sake...).  Eventually I'd like to try some of these projects (hence, this blog serves for me to record ideas), and I'll also share some of my own previous creations with you from years past along the way.

Of course, I should probably explain a few things.  I definitely am not any sort of expert in plants, and will never be.  I am a communications major in college, and while I grew up on a farm, I had to learn the ropes of container/indoor gardening by myself.  I tried doing floriculture in FFA in high school, but I found that while I was very interested in plants, I didn't care too much about their scientific names or knowing a million different pests and diseases all these exotic plants could get.

Gardening is simply a hobby for me; I like to play with plants that are fascinating, whether it be how they look or what they do.  Most of the stuff I try to grow dies eventually, but some have lived for 5 years or so, which encourages me to keep experimenting.

Up until high school, my main focus was on experimenting with outdoor containers during the summer.  This one, for example, is from a few years ago, and ended up being one of my favorite projects:

I've also dabbled in simple indoor container plants before (Pothos and a few varieties of ivy, mainly), but I really got into it for the first time when I had to make a terrarium for biology class.  I fell in love with it.

Nowadays in college, I always try to keep a few plants on hand close to the windowsill.  Currently, I have a Walmart-variety ficus (hey, it was cheap), African Violet, and two small shoots of bamboo kept in water beads.  I've also had a small cactus, carnations, a peace lily, and another ficus.  I love finding new ways to take care of them, whether it be a terrarium or water beads or some other form of irrigation like wick watering.

Gardening on the Windowsill will be my way of sharing these adventures with you, both past and future.  I want to learn, and share my newfound knowledge with you!  And who knows?  You may even start your own windowsill garden because of these ideas.  :]

So from here, the call is yours.  Feel free to join me in my quest to make the indoors feel like the outdoors and learn about different techniques to care for all plant-kind.  If you have any suggestions for me to try, or have questions about experiments I've tried already, just shoot me a comment whenever.  I love finding new techniques to try, and love sharing my awesome successes and horrible failures with others just as much.

Thanks much!  See ya around!

Jenna P.
